What is poison?
- A poison is any substance that can cause illness, injury or death.
- Poisonings can occur when a harmful substance is swallowed,
inhaled, spilled on the skin or in the eyes.
- Bites and stings from insects and certain animals can also
be poisonous.
- Some poisonous substances can cause very mild symptoms like irritation in the mouth or nausea, while others can cause more serious symptoms and can sometimes be fatal.
Never try to guess how poisonous a substance is. If you think that someone has been exposed to something that might be poisonous, call the Poison Center immediately.
