  What substances are most commonly
involved in poisoning?

The top five substances involved in poisoning in
children under the age of six are:

1. Cosmetics and personal care products
2. Cleaning substances
3. Analgesics (acetaminophen, aspirin, ibuprofen)
4. Plants
5. Foreign bodies (toys, batteries, coins)

Young children are at the greatest risk for poisoning because they like to explore and mimic the behavior of older siblings and adults. They haven’t learned yet what is safe for them to eat and drink and what might hurt them. Often, they will eat or drink anything that is left in their reach.

Many products look alike, and this can be very confusing for small children.

Often, medicine is mistaken for candy by
young children. Most medicines are small
and brightly colored like candy, and
sometimes even taste like candy.
